One of the easiest vegetables to grow in the garden is lettuce. Easily started outdoors from seed and so many varieties to choose from. Lettuce likes cooler temps and tends to bolt once heat sets in, best within a temperature range from 45 to about 80 degrees. Hot weather makes it bitter.

To enjoy lettuce all through the growing season plant your seeds in stages so you have lettuce to enjoy all season long. Lettuce prefers full sun (8 to 10 hours), but to have extended production during the hot summer months, plant it in partial shade (filtered sun all day or shade part of the day). Good drainage is important and lettuce loves lots of water.

Leaf lettuce is easy to tuck in between and under taller vegetables, and is perfect for containers.
